Airman Cochran

Joe's BMT Graduation

The best laid plans of men and mice. I thought we had those all worked out. Jen and I were to catch a flight after work on Wednesday, arriving in San Antonio late evening. We anticipated being tired the next morning as wanted to be at the Lackland Air Force Base before 7 a.m. for the day’s activities, culminating in Joe’s graduation from BMT (Basic Military Training).

What we didn’t anticipate was a delayed flight becoming a canceled flight, and ultimately a rescheduled flight. We landed in Detroit that evening—far from San Antonio.

We didn’t anticipate the hotel voucher waiting for us in Detroit turning into an empty promise when the number of displaced passengers outnumbered the available rooms at the airline’s partner hotels. But then, we also didn’t anticipate the companionship of strangers banding together to find room at the inn after multiple “no room” responses. A shared taxi sealed the unique bond among strangers.

Admittedly, our anticipation felt deflated that night. Our new flight plan wouldn’t get us to San Antonio until after the graduation ceremonies were over. We wouldn’t be there at the special moment when parents and spouses were to walk up to and tap out their Airman. Our best laid plans had not been good enough, but we didn’t want that to dampen our visit with Joe. We slept that night. A short sleep, but a good sleep.

Prayers went up. Prayers were answered. A tail wind put us into San Antonio roughly 20 minutes early—not early enough to see the graduation ceremony, but early enough to be there to tap out Joe. The trip down hadn’t been what we had anticipated, but the sweetness of that moment was greater than our anticipation as we were reunited with Airman Cochran.
