What Type of Beads? Radiation or Chemotherapy?

Radiation beads. Chemotherapy beads. All this talk of beads makes me think I’m back in an indigenous Maquiritare village. Red beads. Blue beads. Yellow beads. Strands upon strands of colorful beads. Those people loved their beads.

I’m not sure if Matt is going to love these beads quite as much. I’m sure they’re not as bright, not as colorful. They’re probably rather plain. They even inflict a degree of pain and discomfort. But they could be the best kind of beads yet. All they’ve got to do is shrink some offending tumors on Matt’s liver. If they can do that, I’m thinking Matt will consider them the most beautiful beads on earth. I know that’s what I’ll be thinking.

But which ones? Radiation or chemotherapy beads?

The procedure last Friday showed that too much dye shunted to the lungs making the TheraSpere treatment an unacceptable risk. That’s the treatment that uses the radiation beads and those beads are extra small. Chemotherapy beads are larger, making them the beads of choice.

The plan is for Matt to undergo chemo embolization with the hope of shrinking the tumors in the liver. Glass beads coated in chemotherapy will be inserted through the artery in the groan and will go directly to the tumors to begin their work.

The treatment is scheduled for Tuesday, September 25. We’ll head up after work the night before since Matt needs to be at the hospital by 6:30 a.m. to be admitted for surgery. He will need to be hospitalized for one night. As long as there are no complications, Matt will be released around noon on Wednesday, and we will head home.

Four to six weeks after the treatment, a follow-up CT scan will be taken to determine the degree of success of the treatment. Pray with us that these beads will prove to be the most beautiful beads on earth. Thanks for your love and prayers.

Thank you for such an excellent explanation Rosie! As I’ve shared with friend’s and family about Matt, I tried to explain this process but fear I’ve made a few mistakes with my inadequate description. It is now clear! Thank you dear one for taking the time to write this. Now I can go and rally the prayer warriors on behalf of Matt. Praying and sending hugs and love. ♥
