The TheraSphere® Option

The verdict was in. The oncologist and radiologist had options to present at yesterday’s visit. As we discussed the possibilities, the side effects, the manner in which they would effect quality of life, we all leaned toward the same procedure.

It’s a procedure called TheraSphere® and is a targeted treatment for liver cancer—or for cancer that has metastasized to the liver. It has a good rate of success in shrinking or slowing the growth of tumors on the liver.

The focus is on the liver, the site of metastases from the primary pancreatic cancer, due to the fact that though there is nothing they can do at this point for the cancer in the pancreas,  the tumors on the liver pose the greater threat to Matt’s life.  It would be a three-step process resulting in radioactive beads being placed in the lobe of the liver where the tumors are located in a procedure similar to an angiogram.

The oncologist cautioned that this is not a cure, but an opportunity to slow the growth of tumors on the liver, possibly even shrinking them. With no new tumors showing up, and the current tumors growing steadily, but not rapidly or extensively, Matt is a good candidate for this procedure. It could slow the progress, offering us more time. It’s hard to be against a procedure that offers more time.

There are risks as with any procedure, but the possibility of these occurring are low. To put it in perspective, the cancer itself presents a greater risk.

We are taking the weekend to do further research and pray about this new possibility. Thanks for praying with us.
